Asylumental

Deeply Rooted Design Solutions.

Hey, I'm Dustin. I'm a UX/UI design and product management student based in Chilliwack, BC. I make intuitive products for the real world. My unique experiences allow me to create products for people who often get left out. Outside of class, I grow strange and wonderful ideas under the Asylumental name.

Intro to UX/UI

Getting to Shambhala without a car

Shambhala is BC's biggest and longest-running music festival. For someone who doesn't drive and lives with mobility constraints, planning the trip means digging for shuttle, camping, and accessibility details scattered across the website, Q&A pages, and social media.

I created a persona, Titus Holmes, and mapped his current journey from first hearing about the festival to checking in on site. The map shows where the experience breaks down and who could fix each problem.

  • One home for transport and accessibility info. Scattered logistics were a pain point in almost every phase.
  • Show the full cost and bundle the trip. Combining ticket, shuttle, and camping removes the biggest source of doubt.
  • Digital tools for a smooth arrival. An arrival guide and entrance lanes on the ticket protect the high point of the trip.

Experience

Where I've led

Before design school, I spent years building and running online communities, gaming guilds, and crypto projects. That's where I learned to find the right people, get them on the same page, and turn ideas into something real.

    Founder & Community Leader

Orange Cats Being Orange Cats · Facebook group

An existing group by the same name was being overrun by bots and harmful content, and its owner had gone quiet. I rebuilt it from scratch with safety and community at the centre: automated admin rules to keep bots out, engagement posts twice a week, and a milestone post every time 200 new members join. It grew to over 85,000 members in one summer.

    Guild Founder & Community Leader

Insane Asylum · Online gaming guilds

Founded and led my guild, Insane Asylum, and grew it into a Discord community that spanned many games over 20 years. In each game I usually grew it into a top 5 guild, and often top 3, by recruiting the right people, organizing the group, teaching newcomers how to get up to speed, and creating methods to keep players active and invested in the goals of the guild.

About

How I got here

Before design, I spent 15 years as a trade worker and contractor. On the side, I fixed cars, built online communities, and produced music. All of it taught me the same thing: if something is confusing, people give up on it.

Contracting also taught me to work with clients, budgets, and deadlines, and to plan a job properly before it starts. Now I'm bringing that into UX/UI design at BCIT and product management at UBC Sauder. I like the messy early part best, when you're talking to people, mapping out what they need, and finding the simplest way to give it to them.

Long term, I want to lead products from idea to launch. Asylumental is where I practise that on my own ideas. The rest of the time, I'm a dad of three.
