FlappyFloki

A side-scrolling arcade game I co-founded and launched with a small team. When we couldn't connect our coin to the Android version, we built a competition system around the browser version instead, so players had a real reason to use it.

The game

Dodge, collect, repeat

FlappyFloki was a simple side-scroller: players dodged obstacles and picked up bonuses along the way. It was free to play in the browser and on Android through Google Play.

Behind the game was a coin that people invested in, and they expected it to be useful, not just something to hold.

My role

Running the whole operation

I co-founded FlappyFloki with someone I'd moderated alongside at YTC. I ran operations and was the public face of the project: I led investor outreach, hosted every AMA, shaped the concept and roadmap, and found and partnered with the developers and animators who built the game.

The project grew faster than the two of us could manage, so we brought in a third partner to run the community and marketing.

The problem

The coin couldn't go everywhere

Our holders wanted the coin to have a real use inside the game. But we couldn't connect it to the Google Play version, so we couldn't build it into every version of the game.

The workaround

Build around the limit

The browser version could connect to the coin, so we built the coin's role around competition instead:

  1. Play in the browserThe version that could connect to the coin
  2. Top-score trackerA leaderboard of the best scores
  3. Timed eventsDaily, weekly, and monthly competitions
  4. PrizesBUSD prizes for the top three scores

That gave the coin a purpose and gave players a reason to keep coming back every day.

Launch

Out in the world

Our coin traded on BNB Chain under the ticker FlaFlo.

What was next

An in-game store

We were working on digital items players could buy in the game, like clothes for their character and upgrades.

What I learned

Trust is the asset

Hosting every AMA and answering investors directly taught me how much weight my word carries with people. That trust is the most valuable thing I bring to a team, so I protect it. I don't put my name on anything I can't see into and stand behind.
